REGISTRATION SCHOOLTALKING OPENLY ABOUT ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION
Inspired by the alternative education models of mainland Europe and a history of radical freeducation from across the Atlantic, we teamed up with Callum Copley and Myles Palmer to create our very own free school. Uninhibited by the elite price tag usually affixed to creative education we set about curating a selection of the greatest educators from around Europe. Practitioners we had been taught by, shared studios with, worked on projects with or just admired from afar.
Setting the brief to the workshop leaders loosely around the theme of FEAR, the intention was to talk openly about the inner anxieties and worries that so many suffered from, both during and after graduating through the further education system.
The stage was set for 60+ students to join from across Europe for 3 days of alternative design education. Emphasis was placed hugely on locality, and the setting of the Old Tidemill School in Deptford helped that massively. Each day students engaged in a workshop from one tutor. At the end of the day the workshop outcomes were presented to the school and everyone stuck around for games, ping pong and networking.
The third day we curated a lecture series asking speakers to talk on the theme of fear itself, we had emotional scientist Richard Firth Godbehere speaking honestly and passionately on the of the science behind fear and his very own experience of that. Anthony Burrill gave a bold and fun talk following on from his workshop which played out a bit like creative counselling for the participants.
The design kind of made itself and we took the theme right across all the materials, using a donated typeface from Colophon and sponsored printing from Hato Press. The posters collated fears from applicants and tutors alike, whilst the website provoked a sense of being locked in a darkroom with only a flashlight as a cursor to read the content.
